Specola
1927 coastal observatory perched over the sea
Largo dei Trecento, 11, 84073 Sapri SA

The municipal archaeological assessment places the Observatory right above the five barrel vaults (‘camerelle’) of the Roman villa.
On the city’s Risorgimento trail, the Specola is often paired with the Obelisk of the Three Hundred in Largo dei Trecento.
Astronomical–meteorological tower-observatory built in 1927 by the Padri Bigi, about 15 m high and overlooking the Santa Croce cliffs. Its position dominates the Gulf of Policastro and dialogues with the nearby Church of Santa Croce; at the base, on the seafront, you can see the Roman villa’s ‘camerelle’.
Why visit
For the sweeping view over the gulf and the meeting of 20th-century architecture with the coastal landscape, with photo spots over the cliffs and the town.
